Barenboim leads Staatsoper Berlin Ring Cycle

This June, Daniel Barenboim returns to the Staatsoper Berlin to conduct two complete cycles of Guy Cassiers’s production of Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen.

On June 11 and 25, they present Das Rheingold, spotlighting Michael Volle as Wotan, Roman Trekel as Thunder, Andrew Staples as Glad, Stephan Rügamer as Lodge and Jochen Schmeckenbecher as Alberich.

Barenboim and the Staatsoper Berlin perform Die Walküre at the Schiller Theater on June 12 and 26. The production highlights performances by Simon O’Neill as Siegmund, Falk Struckmann as Hunding, Michael Volle as Wotan, Anja Kampe as Sieglinde, Iréne Theorin as Brünnhilde and Ekaterina Gubanova as Fricka.

Wagner’s third opera in the cycle, Siegfried, is performed on June 15 and 30, with Andreas Schager in the title role alongside Stephan Rügamer as Mime, Michael Volle as The Hiker, Jochen Schmeckenbecher as Alberich, Falk Struckmann as Fafner, Anna Larsson as Erda and Iréne Theorin as Brünnhilde.

The cycle closes with Götterdämmerung on June 19 and July 2. Barenboim, the Staatsopernchor and the Staatskapelle Berlin are joined once more by Andreas Schager as Siegfried, Roman Trekel as Gunther, Jochen Schmeckenbecher as Alberich, Falk Struckmann as Hagen and Iréne Theorin as Brünnhilde.
