To begin his season at the Staatsoper im Schiller Theater this fall, Daniel Barenboim leads a trio of operas by Rimsky-Korsakov, Berg, and Mozart throughout October and early November. From October 3 to 25, Barenboim conducts a new production of Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Tsar’s Bride – a central work in Slavic operatic literature but one which is less well-known in Germany. The staging by Dmitri Tcherniakov sees Olga Peretyatko as Marfa, Johannes Martin Kränzle as Grjasnoj, Anita Rachvelishvili as Ljubascha, and Pavel Cernoch as Lykow.
Beginning October 4, Barenboim conducts four performances of Berg’s Wozzeck that see Roman Trekel in the title role and Waltraud Meier as Marie. Later that month from October 18 to November 3, the Staatsoper’s Music Director leads Mozart’s Don Giovanni in a production that features Christopher Maltman in the title role, Christine Schäfer as Donna Anna, Rolando Villazón as Don Ottavio, and Dorothea Röschmann as Donna Elvira, among many others.
