FESTTAGE 2019 at Staatsoper unter den Linden

The 24th edition of FESTTAGE at Staatsoper unter den Linden begins on April 12, with General Music Director Daniel Barenboim conducting the Wiener Philharmoniker in an evening of works by Prokofiev and Mahler. The concert’s program includes Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 1 in D Major (“Symphonie classique”) and Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 in D Major.

As part of FESTTAGE 2019, Barenboim also conducts performances of Prokofiev’s Betrothal in a Monastery (April 13, 17, and 22) and Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (April 14, 18, and 21).

Later, on April 19 and 20, Barenboim leads the Staatskapelle Berlin in two concerts featuring the work of Giuseppe Verdi. Barenboim and the Staatskapelle are joined by the Rundfunkchor Berlin, which sings “Quattro pezzi sacri,” and soprano Aida Garifullina, who sings a selection of Verdi’s well-known and beloved operatic arias.

On April 20, the Opernkinderorchester (a children’s orchestra for students aged 7 to 12) will have its first performance, playing Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf” with Daniel Barenboim at the podium. The program also includes Mozart’s “Apollo and Hyacinthus” Overture, excerpts from The Magic Flute, and excerpts from Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel. Tenor Rolando Villazón joins as soloist and narrator.
