Barenboim leads La Scala Orchestra and Chorus in performances of Beethoven symphonies and Schönberg works

As Daniel Barenboim launches his tenure as Music Director of Milan’s Teatro alla Scala with a production of Don Giovanni, he also highlights the talents of the house’s resident chorus and orchestra by conducting works by Schönberg and the last five symphonies by Beethoven. On December 11, Barenboim and the Filarmonica della Scala perform Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6, “Pastoral” and Symphony No. 5. Barenboim complements Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 and No. 8 with Schönberg’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in a program on December 15, and pairs Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, “Choral”–famed for its “Ode to Joy”–with Schönberg’s Chamber Symphony in a program on December 21.
