This summer, the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra celebrates its 20th anniversary with a series of concerts conducted by Daniel Barenboim, and joined by soloists Anne-Sophie Mutter, Martha Argerich, and Michael Barenboim.
Beginning on June 30 at Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville, the tour will travel to Buenos Aires, London, Salzburg, Berlin, and Lucerne. The program includes works by Beethoven, Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Lutosławski, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Previn, Sibelius, and Schumann.
Founded in 1999, WEDO was created by Daniel Barenboim and Edward W. Said in order to open up a dialogue between the different cultures of the Middle East through the experience of playing music together. Named after Goethe’s collection of poetry “West-östlicher Divan,” the ensemble, which consists of Israeli and Arabic musicians as well as members from Turkey, Iran, and Spain, has long become a permanent part of the international classical music scene.
