On September 16 and 18, Music Director Daniel Barenboim leads Staatskapelle Berlin in its season opening concerts at the Philharmonie Berlin. Now in his twentieth year as head of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden and its orchestra, the Staatskapelle Berlin, Barenboim will conduct the ensemble in an inaugural program that features Bruckner’s magnificent Ninth Symphony. The American cellist Alisa Weilerstein joins the Orchestra as guest soloist for Bruch’s Kol Nidrei – a series of variations inspired by Jewish melodies – and Elliott Carter’s Cello Concerto, a work in which the composer seeks to find “meaningful, personal ways of revealing the cello’s vast array of possibilities.”
