Daniel Barenboim leads his first symphonic performance of the season at the legendary Teatro alla Scala, where he was recently named Music Director, on November 3. For the concert, Barenboim conducts the Sinfonico del Teatro alla Scala in Richard Strauss’ Till Eulenspiegel, the overture to Verdi’s opera I Vespiri Siciliani, and a trio of works by Debussy: La Mer, le Jet d’eau and Trois Ballades de Francois Villon, with soprano Anna Prohaska as guest soloist. Barenboim then conducts the Sinfonico del Teatro alla Scala again on November 6, this time in Beethoven’s First and Second symphonies and Schoenberg’s Sei Lieder with soprano Deborah Polaski. Then, between November 10 and 17, Barenboim leads the Filarmonica della Scala in four performances of a program that includes Verdi’s Quartetto orchestrated for string orchestra and his Quattro pezzi sacri, as well as Mozart’s Serenade for Winds K. 338.
