Milan’s Teatro alla Scala announced today that Daniel Barenboim will become its next Music Director, beginning a five-year term effective December 1, 2011. Since 2006, Barenboim has served as Principal Guest Conductor and "Maestro Scaligero" at the 233-year-old Italian theater. The Argentine-born Israeli maestro will hold this position in addition to his post as Music Director of the Berlin Staatsoper and Staatskapelle Berlin and his work with the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra.
